South Lombok’s best beaches: From hidden bays to surfer’s paradise

Lombok is quickly emerging as the next big escape, offering travelers a quieter alternative to Bali. South Lombok still feels authentic, with stunning beaches and a laid-back atmosphere perfect for those seeking adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re planning a trip or considering a longer stay, this region is where you’ll find some of Indonesia’s most beautiful beaches.
1. Tanjung Aan
Tanjung Aan is one of the closest beach to Kuta Lombok, only 15 minutes drive. You will find a stunning large beach covered in soft white sand. Walk a few hundred meters to the other end, and suddenly the sand switch to a more grainy one. It’s a little thing, but somehow it makes the beach feel even more special.
Even though there wont be any warungs in Tanjung Aan Beach, this spot is ideal for swimming, beginner surfing or longboarders, and sunset viewing. There’s even a beautiful hill walk offering panoramic views over the bay, perfect for Lombok photography lovers.

2. Selong Belanak
Selong Belanak is probably one of the most iconic beach in Lombok. The sand is soft and the waves are gentle which is a perfect match for surf beginners. The spot is family friendly and if you are lucky in the late afternoon, buffalos walk right across the beach on their way home from the fields.
There are a few local cafés right on the sand, where you can order grilled fish or a fresh coconut and just sit for a while.
Our recommendations:
- Stay until the sunset, the location is perfect and so peaceful.
- Want to catch the buffalo walk? Try your luck and head to the beach around 9.30 am or 4.30pm. If it’s your day, then you can you can have the spectacle view.

3. Mawun
Mawun is just a twenty minutes ride from town. Green hills appear on either side of the beach, which hides away in a lovely half-moon bay. Just serene blue sea and a few palm leaf shadows, no loud beach bars.
The middle of the bay is great for swimming, while the ends have higher waves.
If you’re the type who likes to read a book in the sun with your toes in the sand, this could be the place for you.

4. Areguling
Areguling is not the easiest beach to reach, but that’s part of the charm. This is a cool surf spot for experienced surfers. The views from the hills are incredible, making it a great choice for surf photographers, too.
There are a couple of beachside local warungs where you can enjoy a coffee and lunch after your surf session.

5. Tampah & Lancing
Located about 30 minutes from Kuta, Tampah and Lancing bays are where you can really disconnect. These peaceful beaches in Lombok are known for their untouched nature, soft sand, and crystal-clear waters, perfect for a quiet afternoon away from the crowds.
You will find only few simple warungs, and that’s exactly what makes them special. You can bring a book, a snorkel mask, and just enjoy the island life. Snorkeling is possible on calmer days, especially near the rocks at the ends of the beach.

7. Mawi
It takes a little effort to get to Mawi Beach, which is wilder but certainly worthwhile. You have to drive over a kilometer through bumpy road to be lucky enough to discover this beach.
Mawi attracts a small number of experienced surfers who are great fun to watch when the swell is sufficient. But even on calmer days, the beach is spectacularly calm and beautiful: surrounded by rocks, turquoise water and the power of the waves.
Mawi is a fantastic choice if you like taking surf photos or simply want to experience another side of Lombok.

A few practical tips
- The sun is stronger than you think. Bring enough sunscreen to keep yourself protected.
- The infrastructure are improving, but still a bit basic in some areas. Drive safely and watch out on the roads.
- Pack water (and some snacks) if you’re heading to the quieter beaches. Not every spot has warungs nearby.
- Try to go early, especially to Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan. To enjoy the silence and peace and quiet of those spots.
- Respect the space. These beaches are still largely untouched, so let’s help keep them that way. Take your trash with you and respect the locals.
