Tetebatu: The northern escape in the rice fields of Lombok

When most people think of Lombok, they think of its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. But the island is full of surprises, and a little further north lies a completely different world. You will discover lush green rice fields and beautiful vegetation in a calmer and more authentic climate. Welcome to Tetebatu, the mountain village that offers travelers a refreshing escape into nature and culture.
Located at the entrance of the Mount Rinjani park, Tetebatu looks like a place that time has forgotten. It’s peaceful, uncrowded and deeply rooted in Sasak tradition. Here you will find rice terraces, black monkeys and mostly locals. We often call this place the Ubud of Lombok, with all the perks; no traffic and crowds.
1. Your way to Tetebatu
Getting to Tetebatu is an adventure in itself. The village sits about 2 hours northeast of Kuta. The road goes through small villages and coconut plantations, climbing gradually into cooler, greener hills.
Tetebatu is still a preserved and untouched area. Most accommodations are local homestays or eco-lodges that blend perfectly with the natural surroundings. And that’s exactly the charm: it’s intimate, grounded, and authentic.

2. Why Tetebatu should be on your Lombok itinerary
What makes Tetebatu so special? It’s a combination of green landscapes, rich culture, and tranquility.
- For nature lovers
Tetebatu is a place for nature lovers. The best way to experience this landscape is on foot, accompanied by a local guide. These walks often lead to hidden waterfalls, such as Durian Indah, Sarangan and Jeruk Manis waterfalls, where you can cool off surrounded by the forest. Along the way, you might pass coffee plantations, bamboo groves, and panoramic views of Mount Rinjani.
- The wildlife
If you are lucky enough, you can observe the Black Ebony Leaf Monkeys, known as Lutung. These shy creatures live in the Tetebatu Monkey Forest, part of the larger Rinjani National Park. These monkeys are quiet and reserved, it is quite rare to notice them.
- The Sasak Culture
Beyond the landscapes, Tetebatu offers a profound cultural experience. Lombok is a country where the Sasak culture reigns. Traditions are still very much alive here. As you walk through the village, you’ll see women making sarongs on weaving masters or people collecting the rice.
Many homestays offer cooking classes, where you can learn to prepare Sasak dishes using fresh herbs and vegetables straight from the garden.
3. What to do in Tetebatu
Here a list of our recommendations:
- Guided rice field walks
Walking through the rice terraces with a local guide is the heart of the Tetebatu experience. They typically include stops at waterfalls, monkey forest lookouts, and traditional villages.
- Waterfall hikes
One thing not to miss is all the beautiful waterfalls hidden in the area. We advise you to go to: Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu, Durian Indah waterfall, Jeruk Manis and Serangan waterfall.
- Monkey forest
Take a morning walk to catch the black monkeys when they’re most active. Guides know the best times and spots for sightings, and a peaceful forest walk.
- Cooking & cultural classes
Learn to cook Sasak favourites such as ayam taliwang or try your hand at weaving with a local craftsman.

4. Where to stay
Many homestays feel more like staying with extended family than in a hotel. A few recommended spots include:
- Tetebatu Indah Homestay: Cozy, friendly, and affordable with beautiful garden views and authentic local meals.
- Les Rizières Lombok: A boutique eco-lodge run by a French couple, ideal for travelers looking for sustainability and peaceful spot.
- Dream Catcher Camp: A unique glamping-style stay for those who want something close to nature but still comfortable.
5. When to visit
Choosing the right time to visit Tetebatu can completely shape your experience, whether you’re looking for rich green views, smooth trails, or a calm atmosphere
The best time to discover Tetebatu is between May and October, which marks the dry season in Lombok when the weather is generally clear and pleasant. The trails are dry and accessible, and you’ll enjoy cool mountain breezes, a welcome break from the coastal heat.
If you’re after more vibrant, green landscapes, we recommend visiting from April to June, just after the rainy season ends. This is when Tetebatu truly comes alive. The rice fields are at their lushest, the waterfalls are full and flowing, and the entire region feels fresh and rejuvenated. It’s a nature lover’s paradise.
6. Getting there
The easiest way to reach Tetebatu is by private driver or by scooter if you are adventurous. From Kuta, the journey takes around two hours. Here are your options, what to expect, and tips to make the trip smoother.
By private driver or taxi (recommended)
This is the easiest and most comfortable way to reach Tetebatu, especially if you’re carrying luggage or want to avoid navigation stress. From Kuta Lombok, expect the drive to take around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Private drivers can also double as guides, they’ll know scenic stops, warung breaks, and shortcuts, which helps if you want to explore en route.
By scooter / motorcycle (for the adventurous)
If you’re confident on two wheels and traveling light, renting a scooter offers freedom to stop whenever you like. From Kuta, riders report the trip takes about 1.5 hours, though parts of the main road are busy and may not be ideal for less experienced riders. Always check the weather and road conditions, and bring a map or GPS.
7. Tips for a smooth visit
- Book ahead where possible: Arranging a private driver through your accommodation or in advance ensures you won’t get stranded midway.
- Start early: Departures before 8:00 AM are ideal: cooler temps, less traffic, clearer views toward Mount Rinjani.
- Watch for road changes: Occasional maintenance or flooding (in rainy season transitions) may slow certain stretches.
- Fuel & rest stops: Stations are available along main roads; stop early if you see one in a village, as they are sparser once you turn off the main route.
- Bring cash: There are no ATMs in Tetebatu, so make sure you have a sufficient amount with you for parking or snacks along the way.
- Wear good walking shoes: Trails can be muddy, especially after rain.
- Support local: Book your activities through local guides and homestays.
- Be respectful: Respect the local and wear modest clothing. It is appreciated in village areas.
8. A different side of Lombok
Tetebatu offers something rare: simplicity. It’s a place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and meet people who are proud to share their culture with you. If you’re looking for rice fields and sunset, forest and hike then make time for Tetebatu.
